Who is tick-borne encephalitis vaccination recommended for?

Vaccination is especially worth considering for people who:

  • live in or regularly spend time in areas where ticks are found;
  • go walking in forests, parks and meadows;
  • garden, pick berries or mushrooms, hunt or fish;
  • spend time in the countryside or at summer houses;
  • work in forestry, agriculture or other outdoor jobs;
  • travel to areas with a higher risk of tick-borne encephalitis;
  • want to protect their child in good time before the active tick season.

Ticks are not only found in forests. They can also be found in city parks, gardens and other green areas.

Vaccination for children

Children aged one to 15 years receive the paediatric TICOVAC vaccine at an age-appropriate dose.

Before vaccination, a medical professional assesses the child’s health. If the child has a chronic illness, has had an unusual reaction after vaccination before, or parents have questions about the vaccination schedule, you can also book a paediatrician consultation.

Vaccination for adults

Adults and young people from 16 years of age receive the adult TICOVAC vaccine.

You can be vaccinated even if you have never received a dose or your vaccination course was interrupted. If you do not know the date of your last dose, please bring any vaccination records you have.

If vaccination needs to be assessed in relation to chronic illnesses, medications or your general health, you can book a family doctor consultation.

Primary vaccination course

The full primary vaccination course consists of three doses.

Standard vaccination schedule:

  1. First dose – on the chosen date.
  2. Second dose – usually 1–3 months after the first dose.
  3. Third dose – 5–12 months after the second dose.

If protection is needed sooner, the second dose can be given 14 days after the first. The most suitable schedule is determined by a medical professional, taking into account age, season, health and planned time in tick-risk areas.

It is best to start vaccination early, but it can be started at any time of year.

Tick-borne encephalitis booster vaccination

The first booster dose is usually needed three years after completing the primary course.

The interval for further boosters is determined according to the person’s age, the vaccine used previously, vaccination history and current recommendations.

If a long time has passed since the last dose, the primary course does not always have to be started again. A medical professional will review the doses already received and recommend a further vaccination plan.

State-funded vaccination for children

For certain groups of children, tick-borne encephalitis vaccination is funded by the state. This may apply, for example, to:

  • children whose declared place of residence is in a state-defined tick-borne encephalitis endemic area;
  • orphans and children left without parental care.

How state-funded vaccination is organised depends on the child’s declared place of residence, the family doctor’s practice location and other requirements.

To receive and administer a state-funded vaccine at Republikas laukuma klīnika, please contact the clinic in advance. If the vaccine is state-funded and administration at our clinic has been agreed, the administration fee is €15.

When might vaccination need to be postponed?

Vaccination may need to be postponed if a person has an acute illness or a fever.

Before vaccination, be sure to tell the medical professional if:

  • you have had a severe allergic reaction after a vaccination;
  • you have a known allergy to any vaccine component;
  • you have an acute illness or a fever;
  • you take medications that affect the immune system;
  • you have an immune system disorder;
  • you are pregnant or breastfeeding;
  • you had an unusual or severe reaction after a previous vaccine.

A medical professional decides on vaccination in each specific situation.

Possible reactions after vaccination

After vaccination, short-term and mild reactions may occur, for example:

  • pain, tenderness, redness or swelling at the injection site;
  • tiredness;
  • headache;
  • muscle pain;
  • a slight fever or raised temperature, which is more common in children.

These reactions usually pass within a few days. If you develop pronounced, unusual or long-lasting symptoms, contact a doctor.

How to prepare for vaccination

Special preparation is usually not needed.

Please bring with you:

  • an identity document;
  • your child’s vaccination record or other information about vaccines received previously;
  • an adult vaccination record, if you have one;
  • information about medications you take regularly and known allergies.

After vaccination, it is advisable to stay at the medical facility for a short time under the supervision of medical staff.

Does the vaccine also protect against Lyme disease?

No. The vaccine protects against tick-borne encephalitis, but not against Lyme disease or other tick-borne infections.

Even after vaccination, wear suitable clothing, use repellents and carefully check your skin and clothing after spending time outdoors.
